eBRC Research Report 31

Emergent Themes in Intellectual Capital Research

Antti Lönnqvist & Maiju Markova (eds.)

A company’s intellectual capital consists of various non-physical sources of value. Examples of intellectual capital include employee competencies, organisation’s image, customer relationships and immaterial properties. Intellectual capital is a key determinant of a company’s business performance. It is especially important in knowledge-intensive organisations – and societies. In recent years intellectual capital has also become a rapidly growing research area.

This report presents some emerging research themes related to intellectual capital that are currently being pursued by Finnish researchers. The report also provides different points of view to intellectual capital through six articles that examine the following themes: intellectual capital and industry development; knowledge flows that lie behind intellectual capital; innovation process and the role of knowledge embodiment to value creation; the role of trust in knowledge creation and innovation; knowledge creation, change and communication; and the role of employees as a source of external business intelligence information. This report is a second in the series by the Graduate School of Intellectual Capital and Knowledge Management.
